To uphold these standards, we commit to the following principles:
Safety and Support - We provide a safe working environment that is free from discrimination, harassment, bullying, bias, and abusive competition. We work together to build community standards and expectations for acceptance of those from different socioeconomic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, gender and sexual identities, religions, disabilities, familial obligations, among other aspects of identity.
We will ensure that new lab members have dedicated time with their mentor to discuss their preferred mechanism for voicing cases of concern or deviation from the above standards.
We will address problematic behavior in the moment when safe to do so.
As a group, and as individuals, we will advocate for positive institutional-level changes that foster inclusivity and equity.
Collaboration and Creativity - We promote meaningful and healthy collaboration among our lab members while also respecting individual needs and requests to conserve time and energy.
We agree to meet regularly as a group (e.g. weekly lab meetings) in order to engage in scientific and intellectual discussions
When sharing dialogue surrounding individual projects, we aim to offer expertise and guidance in a way that is mindful of the effort others have spent in shaping their work and analyses.
We will actively foster open dialogues with individuals at all levels of their academic career.
Recognition - We will express appreciation for our lab members and celebrate achievements, understanding that measures of success can vary from person to person.
We will regularly devote lab discussions to feature literature and perspectives from historically excluded or marginalized scientists.
The experience and interest of prospective Breuner Lab members will be assessed using a comprehensive process, rather than solely academic background or impact factor.
We will actively support and encourage individuals pursuing both non-academic and academic career paths.
Wellness & Accessibility - We value the support of physical and emotional health and encourage lab members to explore their own values associated with work-life balance.
We will actively encourage open discussions and goal-setting related to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, understanding this balance is subjective.
We will readily provide resources that can further support lab members in exploring and enhancing their work-life balance.
We will take time to consider the degree of accessibility of organized activities and we openly encourage members of our group to request accommodations when needed. We will listen carefully to these requests and honor them to the best of our ability.
Self-reflection - We believe that our growth relies on dedicating time to reflect on our lab’s mission.
We seek to continually create and share new ideas and actions that will represent our values. We welcome feedback from our group as well as beyond.
We will reflect on the ways our actions within the group affect others and adapt our practices in light of any feedback in order to best align with the core values of the current lab members.
We will dedicate at least one lab meeting a semester to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and to revisit our current lab DEI principles among the current lab members.
